"Girlfriends" - film by Claudia Weill -
Dan! - 09-21-2020
I mentioned this the other night when we were talking about Kubrick. Here's a link to the interview where Kubrick - in 1980! - brushes aside a question about Coppola, etc. in order to voice his enthusiasm for the Weill film. Always thought it was funny.

And a recent-ish piece about the film itself:

It's watchable on YouTube (you have to rent it), BTW.

Thanks for the article. Cinephila & Beyond is such a great source. And what an interview. Probably the nicest things I've heard Kubrick say about Stephen King, too. And you are right, Kubrick was IN LOVE with Girlfriends. I'll have to check it out. Heck, the article was worth it for the behind the scenes photos, alone.
Reading about The Shining reminded me of Vivian Kubrick's making of documentary about the film. There's an interview with her where she talks about how she didn't know how to end it until she found unused music from Wendy Carlos' score. One of the neglected pieces was a short, electronic version of Jean Sibelius' Valse Triste, and that is what Vivian uses to play out her film. I was obsessed with this composition and tracked it down on a rare self-released compilation,
Rediscovering Lost Scores, Vol. 1.
Anyway, it was apparently going to be used for the opening? Not sure, I believe that. But someone has uploaded a video on YouTube with the piece replacing Dies Irae:
