Online Listening Recs
#1

At last night's group, Trey suggested sharing online radio favorites. I was thinking we could include podcasts etc. as well. A couple of mine:

WFMU

A lot of my MGC tracks were discovered on WFMU; some of my favorite shows below. Here's their show schedule.

  • Sophisticated Boom Boom
  • Gaylord Fields
  • Music of Mind Control (great, weird music from cults/fringe religious groups)
  • Morricone Island (all top-notch film music)
  • Ira (Kaplan, from Yo La Tengo)
  • The Duane Train (some punk, etc. but mainly 70s or so black dance music, deep tracks, very enjoyable listen)
  • Scott Williams
  • Honky Tonk Radio Girl
  • Therese
  • Bonus: Pseu's Thing With A Hook, a fave of Dan's
  • Feelings
  • Radio Ravioli

Amazingly, all shows are archived, so you can listen to past shows anytime, (with full track listings) for free, here. (Click on a show name for older archives.)

KXLU (LMU, Santa Monica). Schedule. KXLU Spinitron (track lists). DJ Directory.

Quote:A radio program of beautiful serenades or "boleros" played by trios featuring acoustic guitars and harmonized singing. Featuring original vinyl records from the 50's through 70's as well as modern groups that pay tribute to the golden era of romantic music in Latin America. This is music your Latin grandmother got serenaded with and your grandfather gets drunk to at the neighborhood cantina.

Awesome, younger, non-male DJs:
  • She Rocks!
  • Buttrtunes
  • DJ Donna
  • Scatterbrained
  • Take Your Meds
  • Gail
  • Lilly

More KXLU favorite shows:
  • Molotov Cocktail Hour (Super entertaining, three DJs, have been doing this a long time.)
  • Part Time Punks
  • Music For Nimrods
  • International Voice of Reason
  • A Fistful of Vinyl
  • Witching Hours (great!)
  • No More Heroes

Looking forward to seeing suggestions from you all!

P.S. I tried deleting the extra lines/white space, but after saving, they return. OH THE HUMANITY!

So informative and detailed. Appreciate all the hard work you put into this list. Can't wait to check these out!

Thanks, Jim.

A few suggestions:

Mocs Mix 88.1

This is Chattanooga's NPR station but is taken over by the students of The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga in the evenings. On Monday nights from 11pm - 12am (CST), my nephew has a show called "Music Box". He plays a different musical genre each week, and I rarely recognize a thing he plays on the show. Of course, I had to start with this recommendation.

NTS Radio

Trey introduced me to this new online radio station when he got word that My Bloody Valentine was curating for a day. I've also heard some interesting curated shows from Marshall Allen (Sun Ra), Mica Levi, and Matt Groening.

WMSE 91.7FM

Both of Jason Wietlispach's shows are fantastic. The Modern Chamber is modern classical music that's often played on vinyl. Alternating Currents is an ever evolving styles of music, even rock, that leans towards the experimental side.

WEVL 89.9FM

Apryl and I met while volunteering for this Memphis radio station. I even had two shows on the station until I moved to Chicago. Still occasionally tune in online for a listen.

Mixcloud

Truthfully, I haven't kept up with my Mixcloud account lately. Still, I recommend this free British streaming service that has a massive collection of radio shows. A few that I subscribe: How Does It Feel To Be Loved?, MindDaze, NTS Radio, Grateful Music Israel, the--dream--machine, Headphone Commute, OST, Dwalmacat 798, and The Jazz Pit.

Look forward to everyone's suggestions!

Great suggestions here - I don't have much to add...

As Jim noted, Pseu's Thing With a Hook on WFMU which is maybe my favorite radio show of all time (but your mileage may vary).

BBC6: Iggy Pop, The Huey Show, Giles Peterson, and the great Marc Riley.
