Odd Behavior

Filed under: Eva Cat — Hayden @ 3:10 pm

I’m in the middle of another work edit, so posts will be coming less frequent until I am finished (which should be around next week). However, I thought I would briefly share with you the recent odd behavior of Eva Cat. If you’re a pet owner, you understand that certain behaviors come and go; however, there is never a shortage of new and more strange nuances just around the corner. Recently, Eva has decided that wherever her water fountain rests is not a good enough position. Thus, it must be moved to a more desirable location. So, Eva proceeds to headbutt the back of the fountain, until the fountain ends up several feet away from its original location. Apryl decided to allow such behavior as long as the fountain wasn’t pushed beyond a certain point. Of course, Eva pushed those boundaries, and the fountain was now blocking the hallway to the kitchen. Now, we had recently moved her fountain from one side of the kitchen to the other, so we figured that she was merely homesick for the old days. So, we moved the the fountain back to its past location right next to her food (the reason for the inital move was due to a dangerous plug outlet). However, it wasn’t long before we started to hear that familiar sound: plastic being scraped along vinyl flooring. The picture below catches Eva right after the act of moving the fountain a few feet from her food dish:

Later on, Eva continued to move her fountain a few more feet toward the door.

What’s going on here? I’m not quite sure, but it sure is funny catching her push that fountain around with her head. Below, Eva takes a break from all her hard work with a nap on Apryl’s leg:

Sleep tight, Eva Cat!

  1. my cat maxy likes to pull her water bowl around. she puts her paw inside the bull and pulls it toward her or to the side. i think she thinks its fun!! like, “look what i can do!” also, i think she likes that sound of the bowl moving across the floor. i never thought about it like maybe she doesn’t like where the bowl is. cuz when i try to put her bowl in other places, she doesn’t like it at all. sometimes i put lots of bowls out to test and she still goes for that one that she can slide around with her paw. :)

  2. When Atty runs out of water she picks up her bowl and slams it into my walls. Of course Atty has some anger management issues.

  3. My almost 14-yr old cat Oscar suddenly started moving his water dish a few years ago. It would invariably wake us up at night–that unmistakable sound of a heavy ceramic dish being pushed across the kitchen floor. Finally I just moved the dish to a carpeted room to stop the torture, but he kept on doing it anyway.

Well, old Oscar suddenly became very ill on Friday & had to be rushed to the emergency vet because he could barely walk. Turns out he has heart disease. I was agonizing over euthanasia Sunday and yesterday, but miraculously he’s better today. Not ok, just not lying there like he’s dead.

To make a long story short, the emergency vet said her cat did the same thing with head-butting its water dish. So you are not alone in having a weird cat! Now I’d give anything to hear that middle-of-the-night sound again.

  4. Your comment was very touching. I’m so sorry to hear about Oscar. I lost a cat a few years back that was 15 years old. And even though she sure had a nice long run, it still was crushing. I sure hope Oscar continues to feel better.
