The University of Memphis Men’s Basketball’s season starts tonight! This will be the first time I’ve ever had to root for the home team from afar. And since Yahoo Sports Radio doesn’t work on a Mac, I am forced to keep up with the action through ESPN’s GameCast, which is about as exciting as watching golf on television. Now, there is a U of M Alumni group up here that get together to watch nationally broadcasted games, but the first one isn’t until December 6th when the Tigers take on the Tennessee Vols. Well, it looks like we’ve got a great team this year. I can hardly wait for the Big Dance!November 16, 2006

Supportin’ the Locals

Last night, some old friends rolled through town on tour with their bands Arma Secreta and The Coach and Four. The guys played at Fireside Bowl, which had an odd rule of no bowling while the band was performing. It only seemed like that would have been the attraction. Oh well, we didn’t get to bowl but it was nice getting to hang out with some hometown folks.

Homesick Days

Listening online to WEVL’s Fall Pledge Drive all this week has really got me homesick for being part of the fundraising party. As a programmer, it was one of the few times throughout the year that you were really able to hang out with the other programmers at the station. The environment was often chaotic but never dull. And it was great to see everyone working together so hard for one purpose. I should also add that there was always great food donated by local restaurants. And on the last day of the pledge drive, Apryl would bring her amazing chocolate pie (and if you were at our wedding you know just how amazing it is)! I really hadn’t done much volunteer work before coming to WEVL. And I have to say that my service there has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life. And, of course, it was the Fall Pledge Drive where me and Apryl first met.
In 2005, I took these photos from the Fall Pledge Drive. Great times!
If you would like to help WEVL reach their goal of $62,000 by Saturday, you can give them a call at 901-528-1990 or pledge online.

WEVL Fall Pledge Drive Starts Today!

It’s that time again for WEVL 89.9FM, our favorite radio station anywhere, to have their annual Fall Pledge Drive. Their goal is $62,000, which they must make by Saturday, November 11th. I know that there are several of you out there that read this blog that enjoy what this unique station offers, so please do your part and keep volunteer radio alive!
And if you want another reason to make a pledge, it could be an anniversary gift for me and Apryl. Because it was two years ago this Tuesday, that me and Apryl first met each other volunteering at the station, answering calls on the pledge line. So we owe our marriage to the Fall Pledge Drive (and Judy, of course)!
If you are unfamilar with the station, you can listen online. The pledge drives are always a fun time to listen to the station because of all the special themed programs. Here is a schedule for this weekend:
Friday, November 3
10-noon – Eddie serves up a full menu of r&b songs about food on Down in the Alley
4-6 pm – Tom plays upbeat New Orleans songs about peace and happiness
6-7 pm – Part 1 of Ben Vaughn’s show featuring original versions of well known songs
Saturday, November 4
6-10 am – The Ridge Runner presents four hours of the best songs in bluegrass history
10 am-1 pm – Celtic songs about spontaneous disturbances and outrageous characters
4 pm – Live acoustic music from two of Memphis’ finest musicians, Alicja Trout and Robby Grant
6-9 pm – Brett plays original and cover versions of soul and blues classics
Sunday, November 5
2-4 pm – Prog rock artists covering their favorite rock classics
8-10 pm – Jeremy plays weird and wacky songs on Out on the Side
All times central

Homecoming
This past weekend was homecoming weekend for the Memphis Tigers and for Hayden, Eva, and me. None of us made it to the Tigers game, but we did spend time with friends and family. We stayed at a cabin with Hayden’s dad, sister Paige, brother-in-law Mike, and the nephews part of the weekend. I got to enjoy the grilled hot dogs and Rotel dip, carve pumpkins, and join in with the nephews in trying to scare each other. But I missed out on the fishing, hiking, and cookie-baking fun Saturday because I came back to Memphis to spend time with friends and my mom, whose surgery I couldn’t be in town for on Tuesday. (By the way, my mom’s surgery went fine. She’s a-okay. Yay!)
On Saturday, I had lunch with a few of my lady friends. The highlights included watching Elaina be a mom (it seemed extremely natural), seeing how adorable her daughter (the human Eva) is, and listening to Amber’s hilarious questions about babies. She is an only child and has never been around small children. She’s getting quite an education now that our friends are having children.
Because Sunday was Summer’s birthday, we started talking about being 27. It amazes me that people feel old at this age. I still feel young and like there’s so much I don’t know and haven’t done. Thanks, mom, for teaching me or genetically instilling in me the ability to not feel worried about getting older. There’s nothing I can do to stop it, so I might as well enjoy what new adventures and lessons come each year.
The age of 27 has certainly brought a lot of changes, and most of them have been quite good. It was rough going there for me for a while after we moved. I wanted to stay at the apartment most of the time that I wasn’t at school. Being at home felt calmer and safer than trying to navigate the unfamiliar streets of Chicago. Fortunately, I feel much more relaxed in my surroundings and more ready to explore…just as the weather is slowly starting to turn cold. But I plan to get some leggings/thermal underwear and snow boots and dive in.
