Weird Chicago

Filed under: Holiday,In the Hood — Hayden @ 11:39 am

On the Tour

Last night, Apryl and I went on the Weird Chicago Tour. The tour had been a gift from Apryl from this past Christmas, but we had waited for the right time of the season. Despite nearly missing the bus, and then mysteriously not being on the list of passengers (thank goodness I printed out our receipt), the tour was a ghoulishly good time. Ken Berg, our tour guide, is a psychic detective and ghost investigator that has appeared on numerous programs on the SciFi Channel, TLC, and the Discovery Channel. On top of being very knowledgeable, he was a gracious and funny host that kept everyone relaxed. Here are a few highlights from the evening:

Death Alley

This alley has been given the moniker “Death Alley” after an incident at the Iroquois Theatre where a fire claimed the lives of over 600 people, many of them children. Along with the deaths inside the theatre, many of causalities occurred after folks stepped out to the the fire escape only to discover that the escape had not yet been installed. In the alley, there were hundreds of bodies piled on one another, a cushion that saved some who were merely jumping to their death instead of being burned alive. Wikipedia claims that the incident was the “worst single-building fire in U.S. history with the most fatalities”. To put the death toll in perspective, the Iroquois Theatre tragedy claimed nearly three times more deaths than the Great Chicago Fire. So it makes sense that there is a lot of ghost activity in the area. One of the ghost is a small boy who likes to get the attention of women pedestrians as they pass the entrance of the alley. It is said that he will tug at a woman’s coat or attempt to hold their hand as they are walking by. Creepy.

Even more sinister is that Death Alley is also the location where the notorious clown, serial killer John Wayne Gacy picked up over 20 young men that he would later kill and bury under his house. Beyond creepy.

Next on the tour was another piece of historical tragedy, the Eastland Disaster. Despite being tied to the dock, the SS Eastland was overcrowded and top heavy, resulting in the boat taking in water and eventually sinking into the Chicago River, killing over 800 people. Many of the ghost stories surrounding the disaster occur not on the spot of the incident but where the bodies where stored afterwards. One of the places happens to be where Harpo Studios now rest. Apparently, Oprah did a show on the many ghostly occurrences at the studios. To this date, I haven’t witnessed anything out of the ordinary but surely you will be the first to know.

Another big stop on the tour was at the Congress Hotel, where according to our guide over 20 ghosts make appearances. One of the spookiest places of the hotel is the Florentine Ballroom where people report loud, unexplained banging noises inside and on top of the ceiling. The security guard who let us in shared some of his own personal stories, all the while staying very close to exit doors. He said he liked to lock up the ballroom around 5 o’clock instead of waiting later in the evening. One of these loud noises was captured on video. Below, the beautiful yet spooky ballroom:

Florentine Ballroom

The tour continued with a short drive by of the site of the St. Valentines Massacre. This was a bit disappointing since the spot is spooky only in the sense that it’s now just another condo in Lincoln Park. Still, it was cool to finally know where the famous shootout occurred. Oddly, it’s located very close to the Chicago Pizza and Oven Grinder Co where we took Apryl’s sisters for pizza pot pies and tasty Mediterranean bread. Our guide debunked claims from the restaurant that their building was used as a lookout post.

Another alley we toured was where John Dillinger was apparently shot down and killed by FBI agents. I say “apparently” because as our guide pointed out, there were many inaccurate features (eye color, scars, etc.) found on the dead body and those known of John Dillinger. Some even believe that Dillinger retired from robbing banks and became a pig farmer. Perhaps the upcoming film about Dillinger starring Johnny Depp will address such issues.

Strangely, our tour ended in our own neighborhood. The first stop was down a nearly forgotten street called Seely where a house with an outside light blinks on and off. Our guide said that it always reacts that way when the tour comes by but that acts normal otherwise. I will certainly be testing this theory. The “ghost” light below:

Weird Light

Next up, a tribute to the Virgin Mary under an underpass of the Kennedy Expressway. According to our guide, a woman spotted a salt stain on the side of the concrete wall that looked very similar to the Virgin Mary. She contacted her priest and before you knew it, there were thousands of folks praying before the “miracle”. Check out this online story from a few years back.

Apryl and I have driven by this many times but never knew what it was. I had always assumed it was a sight of where a biker must have been hit by a car. Never did I imagine that it was to many, a scared ground. Unfortunately, the original apparition has been graffitied and painted over but that hasn’t stopped the tribute to continue with lighted candles and prayers written along the concrete wall. Our guide showed us pictures of the original sighting, which were far more convincing. Below, the tribute as it looks today:

Tribute

Our evening ended at the Liar’s Club. At one point the club was one of the first lesbian bars in the city of Chicago. During that incarnation, the owners who were a straight couple were having marital problems. One night, the wife took matters in her own hands, and bludgeoned her husband to death with an ax. According to our guide, there had also been three other recent murders at the building, two of which occurred nearly in the same spot as the first one. A spot that is now occupied by two pinball machines. The most recent strange activity was a few weeks ago when apparently Kiefer Sutherland got drunk inside the bar and began dancing in the street outside the club. Mildly spooky.

While the rest of the folks on the tour got back on the bus, we said our goodbyes and walked back to our apartment. I have never been on a ghost tour, and while it wasn’t terrifyingly scary, it was a lot of fun. I kept thinking that my dad would have gotten a big kick out of it. For the most part, the ghost tour is only as good as it’s guide, and Ken Berg was certainly one of the best. Great time!

October Country
… that country where it is always turning late in the year. That country where the hills are fog and the rivers are mist; where noons go quickly, dusks and twilights linger, and midnights stay. That country composed in the main of cellars, sub-cellars, coal-bins, closets, attics, and pantries faced away from the sun. That country whose people are autumn people, thinking only autumn thoughts. Whose people passing at night on the empty walks sound like rain…

Our 2nd Anniversary

Hayden and Apryl at Pikes Peak

Last week, Apryl and I celebrated our 2nd wedding anniversary by visiting the Upper Mississippi River in the small town (pop. 871) of McGregor, Iowa. McGregor and the even smaller town of Marquette are located right across the Mississippi River from Wisconsin’s second oldest city, Prairie du Chien. Throughout the weekend, we split our time among these border towns.

Unlike the drive for our last anniversary trip, which took over ten hours, this one took just over four hours. On the way, we stopped over in the Troll Capital of the World, Mount Horeb, Wisconsin, because we saw a billboard with a name of a restaurant—the Grumpy Troll—that mimicked the name of our cabin in Iowa—Grumpsters Log Cabins. We took the similarity in name as a sign and took the exit. While our lunch was merely okay (afterwards, we heard the locals talking about the real place to go), it was still worth the trip to visit the Mount Horeb Mustard Museum. Sure, there were a few troll statues around town, but it was the real oddity of a mustard homage that sparked our interest. Below are a few photos from the museum:

After leaving Mount Horeb, we got back on the road and made our way to the Wisconsin/Iowa border.

Happy Birthday to me.

Birthday Cake

Thanks everyone for all the cards and birthday wishes this week. Apryl and I had a fun yet odd time celebrating on Monday with a White Sox game against the Orioles that had a two hour rain delay followed by an up and down score that continued until the game was finally suspended in the 11th inning. The game is going to be resumed in Baltimore in August.

Some photos from the game:

Grounds Crew lifting up tarp

There was a loud applause for the grounds crew as they removed the tarp after a two hour rain delay to start the game.

Small crowd

Since the rain never stopped there were very few people in the lower decks. Luckily, our seats were the first in the lower deck to have a cover over them. So, we stayed relatively dry during the entire game.

Crede at bat

My favorite, Joe Crede, at bat right before being hit by the pitch. Walk it off Joe!

Hayden's Sign

My birthday sign got me and Apryl on the Jumbotron. And it only took 7 innings!

Just happy to be at the ball park!

Apryl sad face

Apryl is probably wondering when this game is going to ever end!

So the Orioles score in the 11th inning which makes me think we surely have lost this game. I mean by the game’s end we left 14 batters on plate. However, Juan Uribe, who hasn’t played the entire day, comes into the game and hits a home run to tie up the score. Unfortunately, the Sox couldn’t score anymore and the game was finally called off due to an excessively muddy field and the continuing down pour.

Suspended play.

That night we got some tasty sushi from Coast and enjoyed some of Apryl’s wonderful chocolate pie!

The rest of the week was spent working (including a segment for the Ellen show at our favorite pizza joint Giordano’s) and taking Eva for her follow up. Another thank you to everyone that’s been asking about Eva Cat. She is doing well and we were told there is “no evidence of recurrent disease”. On Monday we will find the results of her blood work. Since we’re talking about Eva, I’ll finish this post with an Eva photo:

Today is Apryl’s birthday! Unfortunately, Apryl’s been under the weather so we had to cancel her pizza party at yummy Giordano’s. It’s really no fair to be sick not only on your birthday but during your Spring Break, too! I hope she starts feeling better real soon.

Goodbye Christmas Tree

Filed under: Holiday,In the Hood — Hayden @ 1:53 am

Green Into Blue

Every year, after Christmas, a program called “Green To Blue” sets up recycle centers at various parks throughout the city to take your Christmas tree and send it through the grinder, shedding it into a thousand bits of mulch.

See below:

Not only is it fun to watch, it’s a far better way of disposing of your Christmas tree than dumping it in the trash. So this morning I grabbed our tree and headed to our nearest participating location, Humboldt Park.

Most of the trees came into the park fastened on the top of a car’s roof, but my favorite way of getting a tree to the park came from this couple below:

The atmosphere is actually quite festive for what would seem like a sad event. For bringing in your tree, you’re offered a gift of either a compact fluorescent light bulb, a reusable water bottle, or blue recycling garbage bags. I took the bags.

So long tree. We shall all miss thee.

What We’ve Been Up To – Part 3

The Holidays

1. Christmas Tree

Apryl puts on lights

This year we decided to get our Christmas tree early so that we would have more time to spend with it before leaving town. So we got into the Corolla and headed over to Home Depot (I know, I know, we always feel a little bit guilty not buying from an independent tree vendor, but it’s so much more expensive). At the Depot, it seemed like there were quite a few other people with the same idea as us. Many of the trees were already wrapped up, which seemed silly because you have no idea what you’re really getting. Also lined up, they reminded me of the pods from Invasion of the Body Snatchers:

Christmas Tree Pods

It took some time, but I think we were both pleased with our final decision. Below, us deciding:

As we were checking out, it started to snow.

And hey, this year I didn’t even scratch up my car getting the tree out of the car.

Hayden gests tree out of car

Of course, with anything new brought into the house, Eva had to fully investigate the tree. And to Eva, this was definitely one of our most intriguing purchases of the year.

Even though we had good intentions, it took a few weeks until it actually got this point:

2. Snow

Our street covered in snow

We had what was probably our largest snowfall since we’ve lived in Chicago. It was in the middle of the month, so I was still hard at work on the cheerleading videos. But I certainly needed a break, and Apryl’s friend Alison was having a birthday celebration that night at a restaurant in our neighborhood. So,I left the computer for a few hours, bundled up, and ventured out with Apryl to the Silver Cloud. See photos:

It was a fun getaway, and I finally got to meet Apryl’s school friend Ellie. Below, is a photo of Alison and Michael right as Alison was being handed her HUGE chicken pot pie:

After dinner, Apryl went out with Alison and her friends to Cleo’s, but I needed to get back to work, so I walked back home. But not before a group photo:

The snow hadn’t let up the entire time we were having dinner and was still coming down hard as I walked along the straight white sidewalks. While it was too cold to take off the gloves for long, I did grab a few snapshots:

The next day I was disappointed that I was still stuck inside working and couldn’t go play in our snow-covered park.

3. The 1st Annual Christmas Evil Party (now to be known as the Merry Scary Christmas Party)

Punch bowl of yummy egg nog

We had a few friends over for our first annual double-feature Christmas horror night. Now, the movies we showed are actually scary films that have some type of Christmas theme. Surprisingly, there are quite a few out there. I decided to give everyone four choices (Home for the Holidays, Don’t Open `Til Christmas, Silent Night, Deadly Night, and Christmas Evil) and then have everyone vote on which two we were going to watch. Well, Home for the Holidays was the big winner. Released in `72 as a Made for TV Movie, Home for the Holidays stars a young Sally Field along with Julie Harris (The Haunted) and Jessica Walter (Arrested Development). The script was written by Joseph Stefano (Psycho) and produced by Aaron Spelling (Dynasty, Beverly Hills 90210, 7th Heaven, etc.). Of course, this was going to a popular choice. Second, we watched Silent Night, Deadly Night. And I only have one word for this classic: “Punish!” I guess you had to be there.

4. Downtown Chicago

Christmas Tree downtown Chicago

A few days before heading out of town, Apryl and I took in the sites downtown while doing some last-minute Christmas shopping. It’s always fun seeing the large tree made from many smaller trees that stands high in Daley Plaza (See above).

And, of course, we had to check out the Macy’s store window displays. This year the story was The Nutcracker:

The Nutcracker

My favorite window display is the one below, which changes the location of the fairy tale to Chicago. Notice the Merchandise Mart along with The Art Museum and Navy Pear.

Another thing we both noticed was that many of the Salvation Army folks were really working for their money. Below, the Salvation Army become puppeteers:

That night, Apryl made butter cookies. Yummy!

5. Music Box

Music Box

24th Annual Music Box

One of Apryl’s few posts on this blog was about last year’s screening of White Christmas at the Music Box theatre. (And, of course, it’s one of the most enjoyed entries on the blog.) Now, White Christmas is one of Apryl’s favorite movies of all time. In fact, she flew to Memphis for a weekend trip last month just to see a musical version of it at the Orpheum. Well, we had so much fun last year, and it certainly got us in the spirit, that we decided to go again this year, despite the 60 mph winds. Along with White Christmas, we checked out the rest of the full double feature, It’s A Wonderful Life. However, the funniest moment came before the movie when Santa sang carols with the crowd. During the “Twelve Days of a Chicago Christmas,” the 5th day replaced Five Golden Rings with No More George Bush, which resulted in cheering from the audience. Apryl and I looked at each other. Apryl stated, “We’re not in the South anymore.” As for the movies, there really isn’t any comparison between watching them at home and with a crowd that applauds the hero, hisses the villains, and rings their jingle bells at the right moment. When we left the theatre, it was snowing.

6. Christmas Break

Hayden and Apryl at WEVL party
(At the WEVL Volunteer Appreciation Party. Photo by Tim Genty.)

Though we’re excited to see family and friends, it’s always a little sad having to leave our apartment, especially our Christmas tree, during the holidays. We left on Christmas Eve and luckily only had to drive through a little bit of snow on the long trip south. Since most of our readers are our friends and family, I won’t go into too much detail about our trip. But it certainly wouldn’t have been the same without: Christmas day with family (Moms, Dads, Sisters, and the In-Laws), Snowglobe at the HiTone, Huey’s, watching Juno with Brett and Vanessa, Amber’s party, WEVL holiday party, Sophia, seeing the Litton’s, Guitar Hero, Brian, Michelle, and Little Joe, and Tiger’s basketball. Unfortunately, sickness kept me from seeing everyone. Congratulations, Summer.

7. Back Home

Gas Station Snow

I started feeling sick a few days before we returned home. But it was especially rough when we actually packed up and got on the road on New Year’s Day. I always thought that a sore throat was the worst, but I think I have reevaluated that judgement after having swollen neck glands that caused pain anytime I swallowed. We were actually trying to get back in time because I had a job on the 3rd. However, I had to call in sick and lose the job. Luckily, I am feeling better. Unfortunately, Apryl got sick as well and is still in recovery mode.

And yes, I’ve already had some Giordano’s!
