King Kong Lives!

Filed under: Music — Hayden @ 12:57 pm

After a five year absence, Louisville’s King Kong is back with their very own blend of funk and general absurdness. I like to describe the Kong as the party band no one hired but no one dared pull the plug. My first introduction to the Kong was in high school when I picked up a cassette of their album Funny Farm. Back in the day, I just didn’t get it. How could I take a band like this serious? Of course, my questioning was part of the problem. King Kong aren’t a band to be analyzed but one to chuggle at and dance to. I mean a sample of their song titles include “To Love A Yak,” “Scooba Dooba Diver,” and “Dance of the Ducks”.

Last night, King Kong headlined another one of the Empty Bottle’s free Monday nights. While less of a crowd than for Headache City, there were definitely loyal Kong fans up front and center singing and dancing. I assume that there is probably a larger fan base here than other cities because King Kong are on the Chicago label, Drag City. The majority of the set came from the new album, Buncha Beans, which doesn’t deviate too much from the sound of Kong five years ago. Older tunes I recalled hearing where “Uh-Oh,” “Bad Cat Blues,” “Funky Monkey,” and, of couse, the classic “Funny Farm”.

Sox vs. Twins – TV Game #3

Filed under: Sports — Hayden @ 4:30 pm

Well, the Sox lost their first televised game (at least on basic cable) against the Twins. I didn’t even realize that today’s game was being broadcasted until I turned on the TV and happened to catch the first pitch. Anyway, here we go:

1. Today’s matchup: The Sox vs. Santana… Johan Santana that is, one of the best pitchers right now in baseball.
2. The starting pitcher for the Sox was John Danks who was making his major league debut. Other than the 3 runs he gave up in the 4th inning, he was quite impressive.
3. For several innings after the 4th, the WGN scoreboard going into commericals stated that the score was 0 – 0.
4. On a full count, it’s always amusing when a batter watches the last pitch, assuming that it’s a ball, yet the plate umpire calls it a strike. Embarrassing. Even more embarrassing when there are two outs, and the batter is already trying to take their base, while the defense is running towards the bullben.
5. I’m starting to recognize several routines from Sox batters when they’re up to bat. Before each pitch, Thome likes to extend his bat from his body, pointing it towards center field. Konerko spits into the palms of his gloves and rubs them together for extra friction.
6. The camera angle for close up’s on right-handed batters showed two girls that held up small, hand-written signs. One of them said: Happy Easter. The other: Hello Sarah. After nine innings, I think Sarah’s got the message.
7. The Easter bunny entertained the crowd with the Robot Dance.
8. A ten year old sings “God Bless America” during the 7th inning stretch.
9. The second televised Sox homer is once again provided by Juan Uribe.

Sox vs. Twins – TV Game #2

(A freezing cameraman does his best to keep the shot steady.)

Despite the bitter cold temperatures, the Sox get things done with a 3-0 win over the Minnesota Twins. So here we go, my 9 comments:

1. Over 33,000 fans attended today’s game with wind shield factors of 10 degrees!

2. It just doesn’t seem right when you can see the player’s breath.
3. Do you remember in little league how much it would hurt to make contact with a ball on cold days? I can’t imagine the type of pain the players today had to endure.

4.. Former Cub’s Mark Grace was one the game’s commentators. Now that’s a name I remember from my old baseball cheering days.

5. Another Sox is hit by a baseball. This time it’s Jermaine Dye who’s hit right on the ribs from a hundred mile pitch.

6. My favorite comment on South Side Sox today was regarding the Sox fans’ pestamistic attitude, “This site (and Sox fans in general) has gotten very depressing over the past year and a half. We’re kind of…whiners.”

7. I got to see my first televised Sox home run of the season, provided by Juan Uribe.

8. No matter how many times you’ve seen them, home runs are still exciting to see, whether they’re in person or on the Tube.

9. I had gotten myself a slice of deep dish pizza (from My Pizza Pie) to eat while watching the game. Unfortunately, I got the starting time wrong so I had to eat it watching the Cubs’ game.

I promised I wouldn’t do this…

Okay, I know I said that I would only be posting about the Sox on TV games days, but this was just too funny. Tonight’s game against the Minnesota Twins has been cancelled because… it’s too cold to play baseball! With 22 degree weather and a 0 wind chill factor, I suppose the deciding factor was actually that no one would bother to show up (even though frigid weather has never stopped Da Bears fans). Tomorrow’s game is suppose to go on as scheduled at 1pm.

Update: Looks like the Cubs are going to get their first win of the year against the Brewers. And since Milwaukee is only an hour and a half away from Chicago, a large majority of the fans are Cubbies (which is evident on the WGN broadcast). Note to self: must make a day trip to the “Brew City”!

Memphis Crime

Filed under: Back Home — Hayden @ 11:25 am

Have any of you (particularly our Memphis friends) seen this new website, Memphis Crime Stories? It’s connected with the Commerical Appeal and allows you to check crime reports through a series of categories: Crime Type, Street, Date, Police District, and ZIP code. Here’s a report on my old street Clark.

Sox vs. Indians – TV Game #1

Filed under: Sports — Hayden @ 4:43 pm

Well, the Sox (or The Good Guys as the fans call them) got their first win of the season! Only, it was a bit anticlimactic. The set up: the game is tied 3-3 going into the bottom of the ninth. The Sox are up to bat, and the bases are loaded. Sounds like every baseball movie cliche, huh? Up to bad is A.J. Pierzynki who is 0-3 for the day. Time to be a hero. So what happens? Pierzunki got knicked (and I do mean knicked) by the pitch as he attempted to check swing. I don’t think the umpire even noticed until Pierzunki pointed it out to him. Thus, the runner on third scored and off went the fireworks. My favorite comment on the South Side Sox blog was, “He pulled a Homer!” Still, a win is a win, and it feels good to finally have a “W” under our belts (the Cubbies, on the other hand, are still looking for win #1).

Now, since I’m sure most of our readers could care less about my attempt to get back into baseball, I will keep these Sox posts brief, and only post on TV game days (which there are 60 on our basic cable plan). Below, are my nine (get it?) observations about TV Game #1:

1. The baseball injury I fear the most occured in the second inning when Sox pitcher Mark Buehrle was pelted in the upper arm (pitching arm at that) with a line drive from Ryan Garko. Ouch! Luckily, the xrays showed that the arm is not broken.
2. Watching the game on TV is great not only because there is the visual, but also because you can hear how to pronounce player’s names like Tadahito Iguchi.
3. Nickname: Tadahito Iguchi = Gooch (Forget correct pronunciation.)
4. Nickname: Scott Podsednik = Pods
5. Why do people get tickets in the lower box only to jab away on their cellphone during the entire game?
6. Sox fans are a rather pessimistic bunch.
7. After the 400th time, that same Comcast commerical really starts to get on ones nerves.
8. My first attempt at actually watching the entire game was going very smoothly. I thought this is really isn’t that slow pace of a game. Then, I realized it was just the 3rd inning.
9. Actually, the game was pretty exciting due to the tight score. I only wish the game could have ended with a grand slam rather than a “D’oh”!

Pierzunki pullin’ a “Homer”!

The Good Guys win!

I wonder if Apryl could hear the fireworks at school?

Springtime Snow?

Filed under: Weather — Hayden @ 9:06 pm

Even though we only experienced flurries, the fact of the matter is that it did snow here in April. Which I suppose isn’t that far out for Chicago, but we’re still new here. And we had just gotten use to the warmer temperatures that we’ve been having for the past few weeks. The cold weather is suppose to last thoughout the week with more flurries possible on Saturday and Sunday. Next week, temps rise to the mid 50’s.

Old Friends

Filed under: Food — Hayden @ 2:52 pm

On Sunday, Apryl and I finally got to meet up with Trey and Rachel who have moved back to Chicago after living in South Korea for the past two years. Talk about culture shock! If you have been reading the comments here on the blog, you know that Trey and I are friends from way back in the day. Until yesterday, I hadn’t seen Trey in over ten years.

We met with the two and a few of their friends at Flo. Of course, I checked the menu online before we ventured out, and had settled on the huevos rancheros. I use to love to get the dish when we lived in Memphis, but I never thought of the Mexician dish being served for breakfast, since we didn’t have any Mexician restaurants open that early. Now, that we live next to two 24 hour Mexician restaurants, I have been aching to get huevos rancheros actually for breakfast. Apryl tells me that during my birthday weekend, we are making us an early rise trip!

Anyway, back to Sunday’s breakfast. It was great seeing Trey and meeting Rachel. Rachel gave us gift bags with an assortment of Korean candy! Hopefully, we will get a chance to hang out with each other, especially since we live so close to one another. We have already planned an evening on my birthday to check out The Books at Old Town School of Folk Music.

Getting down with the CPL

Filed under: In the Hood,Random — Hayden @ 4:37 pm

A couple weeks ago, Apryl and I got our Chicago library cards. I know, real exciting, right? I suppose I mention it because it’s one of those little things that make you feel like you are really living here. Of course, we took photos of the event:

We already owe library fines!

Of course, the real big news is that my buddy Trey is back from South Korea. And he and his wife have gotten a place a mere five-minute bus ride away from our apartment. I am looking forward to meeting up with him after a ten year absence!

Summer’s Gone

Actually, it’s been a few weeks since Summer, our friend from Memphis, came up for a visit. But I just got around to loading some of the photos from her trip, so I thought I would post about it. She arrived on a Saturday morning by train, and we picked her up at the downtown Union Station. It even snowed for her as we left the station and made our way to our apartment and eventually breakfast at one of our favorites spots, Toast. Check out my dish below, the French Toast Orgy.

Unfortunately, Apryl was busy most of Summer’s stay but I had no jobs going on at the time, so Summer and I got to hang out. One day we spent the entire day just walking around downtown Chicago, which gave me an excuse to take some snap shots of the city, including the typical photo under the tracks:

We spent a lot of time at Millennium Park which contains such Chicago landmarks as the Cloud Gate, Crown Fountain, and the Jay Pritzker Pavillon. There were even people still ice skating in the park at the time. Check out the photos I grabbed below:

Afterwards, we ventured back through the heart of downtown.

For the rest of the day, I only took photos of our trip through Macy’s, which of course, use to be Marshall Fields.

A very bundled up Summer humors me with a pose in front of the infamous Marshall Field sign.

Summer discovers Franco candy at Macy’s, and…

…makes a purchase. She even bought me rum balls. Yummy!

We made it to several more stores before Apryl finished up at school and was able to meet us downtown for some Giordano’s pizza dinner. And as every reader here knows, Giordano’s stuffed pizza is our favorite!

The next day, we all headed to Chinatown for some lunch. However, after lunch, Apryl got sick so I won’t even bother to post the photo of the restaurant we ate at. Only, I doubt that we will ever be going back.

Apryl and the Nine Dragon Wall.

And here is some odd advertisement at the train stop:

I could just imagine the type of local news attention this would get in Memphis.

The next day we took the long train/bus trek over to The Museum of Science and Industry to check out the Body Worlds 2 exhibit. Since there was no photography allowed inside, I will just give you this photo of Summer and Apryl about to enter (exciting, huh?):

I’m not even going to try to explain this exhibit. If you are unaware of it, please click on the link above and make every attempt to see it before it closes.

Body Worlds 2 (which I kept trying to call Body Works that whole day for some reason) pretty much took up all our time at the Museum. It may be a cliche to say, but you really need a couple of days to see everything here. However, there was this amazing train model that represented downtown Chicago and the surrounding suburbs. But instead of the typical freight trains, these were the L trains and the Metro. The CTA trains even made their stops!

So, there you go. A few photos from Summer’s visit. We also went out to eat in the India district on Devon Street, which was fun, but we were all to cold to do too much sightseeing afterwards. The last night we ate at one of 24 hour Mexician restaurants, and were accused of not paying for a side dish of guacamole dip that we never got. Perhaps, I’m leaving all the best stories out.

As I said, it’s a shame that Apryl was so busy with school that she wasn’t able to spend that much time with her friend. Still, Summer and I had a good time hanging out. She was a very relaxed guest. Hopefully, she will be able to come back when we all have more free time.
