O Christmas Tree

Filed under: Holiday — Hayden @ 4:49 pm

Are you still on the edge of your seat? Even though we have very limited days to enjoy it, we went ahead and got into the spirit and purchased our first Christmas Tree as a married couple. Which was all a bit odd to Apryl, since she grew up with Christmas trees that were actually cut down by her father. And since we’re on a budget, we bought our tree at the Home Depot instead of the corner tree lot (which is next to the Vienna Factory, I might add). Below, Apryl walks down the aisle of trees, surveying the selections:

And she’s found one!

Let the cutting begin!

No pictures of us getting the tree into my car, but it did do a good number on the paint job of my bumper. So, it looks like we didn’t save any money at all. Of course, the same thing would have probably happened at the tree lot, so we still probably saved a few bucks. When we took the tree out of the car, we both stepped into dog mess, which was a heck of a way to get the festivites started. But after dinner, we seemed to get back in the mood.

And here is Tree Man:

There are two ways to put lights on a tree: the wrong way and the right way. And Apryl does it the right way, which is why there aren’t any photos of me during this stage.

And she’s done!

At which point it was three in the morning. Another hour for ornaments, and it was time for bed. I didn’t get a great photo of the tree with the ornaments but I did get this one:

Merry Christmas!

Random At Best

I have been so busy with work (editing) that I haven’t been able to write a post in awhile. But I thought I would take a second to alert you that we are still here and doing fine. Apryl’s semester ends this week, and I’ll be less busy by mid week (I hope). So expect future holiday postings real soon, including whether or not we get a tree. Now that I have you on the edge of your seat, I thought I would share with you five songs NOT from 2006 that I have been listening to alot. Random post I know, but enjoy:

Sun Ra – The Perfect Man (Greatest Hits)
There has been a month’s long celebration of Sun Ra here so I’ve been motivated to listen to a lot from the Sun Ra’s exhaustive back catalog. “The Perfect Man” is reason #1004 why we are still at awe with the man from Saturn.

Kevin Hewick – Spain (Tender Bruises and Scars)
I bought this record from eMusic merely on a whim (and to fulfill my monthly download subscription). And while I am not impressed with the majority of this one, the song “Spain” is brillant. I have listened to it on repeat on numerous occasions.

Daniel Johnston – Don’t Play Cards With Satan (YouTube Video)
Click here to witness one of the greatest solo performances ever recorded. It will make you smile, laugh, and ultimately leave you heart broken.

John Fahey – Untitled With Rain (Red Cross)
An atypical piece from Fahey’s last album. Fahey abandons his typical acoustic guitar stylings for electric guitar, organ, and a field recording that sounds like it’s coming from Fahey’s open window apartment on a rainy day. Very moving.

Sid Selvidge – For All We Know (Waiting For A Train)
This one is just plain pretty. And I listened to it over and over on the plane ride to Philadelphia.

If you are unfamilar with any of the tracks above give them a listen and tell me what you think. And look out for “best of” 2006 lists when I have time to think straight.

The Music Lovers… It’s Back!

Filed under: Music — Hayden @ 11:58 pm

It’s true… sort of. I will be recording a monthly two hour program on WEVL called The Music Lovers’ Monthly Review which I’ll be playing my favorite new releases of the past month. You can think of it as a monthly “best of” of The Music Lovers. Check out the first program this Tuesday (and all future programs on the first Tuesday of each month) from 4-6pm. I’ll be posting the playlist at the old site.

And the winner is: Pat’s King of Steaks

Filed under: Food — Hayden @ 11:44 am

Well, I decided to go with Pat’s King of Steaks. Not only because I know that I love `em but their location was closer to me than Tony Luke’s, which meant I would have more time to relax between the job. So I grabbed a cab from the hotel to the intersections of 9th, Wharton and Passyunk Ave.

It had rained earlier in the day (and would get substantially worse as night fell) so most of the front tables were soaked and were not in use. But as you can see from the photo below, the damp weather didn’t keep a good crowd huddling towards the back of the establishment.

Of course, I couldn’t resist letting the ritual of eating two cheesesteaks in a row go to waste, so I decided I would use the opportunity to try out the pizza steak along with my “regular” order. So into the line one goes.

My order: One steak wit (meaning I want onions) and provolone and one steak wit and pizza.

I thought a cheesesteak with pizza sauce would be only pizza sause but I immediately got questioned, “What cheese?” I start to panic, what cheese goes with a pizza sauce covered steak fest of a sandwich? I don’t know. But I better say something or I’m going back to the end of the line to practice my order. So I uttered:

“Cheez Whiz!” (which is really the authentic choice for a Philly cheesesteak)

Before finding a place to chow down your steaks, you have to pay visit to the pepper bin that dominates the condiment table. Now, you are ready to find a nice, dry spot.

So, here is what my order looked like. My favorite has still got to be the classic steak wit onions and provolone. Though, the pizza steak wasn’t too bad either. It taste like rotel dip on a Philly cheese, which is nice but nothing I want (or need) to consume on a daily (or yearly) basis. As with many food cultural phenomenon, the dish always seems to be tastier from where it originated. Sure, the Philly cheesesteak is copied the world over, but I swear you won’t find any better than those from the City of Brothery Love.

So, I leave Pat’s King of Steaks for another year and decide that the best thing for me to do is to resist flaggind down a cab and walk the two miles back to the hotel.

Philly Bound

It’s about that time of year where I travel to Philadelphia to film cheerleaders who perform in the Boscov’s Thanksgiving Parade, which is the oldest parade celebrating the turkey holiday in the United States. Of course, one of the best parts of the trip is indulging in a yearly ritual, devouring a Philly cheesesteak from Pat’s and Geno’s (Pat’s is still my favorite!). Though, this year I was wondering if perhaps I should try somewhere different this time. I’ve heard good things about Tony Luke’s. Well, the hotel I’ll be staying in has Wi-Fi so I should be able to update those whose lives are depending on my decision.

Tiger Ball Starts Tonight!

The University of Memphis Men’s Basketball’s season starts tonight! This will be the first time I’ve ever had to root for the home team from afar. And since Yahoo Sports Radio doesn’t work on a Mac, I am forced to keep up with the action through ESPN’s GameCast, which is about as exciting as watching golf on television. Now, there is a U of M Alumni group up here that get together to watch nationally broadcasted games, but the first one isn’t until December 6th when the Tigers take on the Tennessee Vols. Well, it looks like we’ve got a great team this year. I can hardly wait for the Big Dance!
